Simpler Recycling comes into force with new rules for workspaces

Many workplaces across England must recover plastic, metal, glass and paper waste under laws that came into effect this week.

The first phase of the government’s Simpler Recycling overhaul kicked in on Monday 31 March.

This means spaces where 10 or more people work have to arrange for collection of specified dry materials separately from general refuse.

Sustainability watchdog the Environment Agency has become the regulator for Simpler Recycling, which will extend to households from the end of March next year.

Circular economy minister Mary Creagh said the government was “committed to ending the throwaway society”.

“Simplifying the rules for workplaces will make recycling easier, maximising environmental benefits, delivering cost savings and stimulating growth,” she added.

Environment Agency deputy director of waste and resources regulation Steve Molyneux hailed “a pivotal moment” as Simpler Recycling kicked in.

The government last week set out detailed guidance about the items that councils will have to collect from households from next year.
