European Metal Recycling (EMR) has bought five metals processing sites from SITA UK.

Following a formal review of the company’s metal recycling division that was announced in July, SITA has sold the sites at Boreham, Coventry, Lenwade, Norwich and Sheffield to EMR.

However, two sites at Hayes in Middlesex and North Tyneside have seen their metal operations close, although other SITA activities are still taking place at these facilities.

SITA UK undertook the review of its metals recycling division following difficult trading conditions within the metals recycling market that had persisted for several years.

This was exacerbated by the decline nationally and globally in both demand and the pricing of metals within commodities markets.

At the time of the review announcement in July, SITA UK chief executive David Palmer-Jones said: “We have built up an excellent metals recycling team and service for our customers which has led the way in setting industry standards within metals recycling, making today’s announcement all the more difficult.

“We have decided to launch this formal review, however, following years of difficult trading conditions and no sign of improvement in the medium term.”
