Exports of paper from Spain now account for 55% of turnover worth €4.6 billion (€4.1 billion).

ASPAPEL president Jordi Mercader said: “The existence of a strong national paper industry has allowed, during the pandemic, to meet demand and avoid shortages of essential products.

“Products such as toilet and sanitary papers, packaging for food, drink or pharmaceuticals and graphic papers for communication, information, leisure and culture, among others, manufactured by the Spanish paper industry.”

The highest growth in 2019 production was seen in corrugated cardboard which increased by 10.6% to 3.3 million tonnes. Toilet and sanitary paper production also rose to 777,400 tonnes, which was an increase of 8.2%.

However, the production of graphic papers dropped by 7.2% to 956,200 tonnes.
