A project looking to optimise the anaerobic digestion (AD) process has suggested that bioplastics could be created from the waste.
VTT Technological Research Centre of Finland (VTT) is coordinating a European project that will look at the AD process and how to optimise biogas production or use volatile fatty acids that could be converted into oil-replacing bio-based products such as bioplastics.
The study will look into how to control the digestion process and will seek to develop a prototype for process monitoring and controlling the systems.
Partners from Finland, Netherlands and Spain will share a €1.15 million (£0.98 million) budget for the two years of the project.
