Toyota Motor Europe has set out plans for a ‘circular factory’ to process end-of-life vehicles in the UK .
The car giant said it would begin reusing, remanufacturing and recycling elements from its products from its Burnaston plant near Derby this summer.
This will represent the first stage of a Toyota Circular Factory concept that will be rolled out across Europe.
Reusable parts will be reintroduced to the market through retailers and distributors while items such as batteries and wheels will be assessed for remanufacturing, repurposing or recycling.
Toyota also intends to recycle raw materials such as copper, aluminium, steel and plastic.
The firm hopes to reprocess 10,000 vehicles a year in its Derby facility.
It said this would give “new life” to 120,000 parts, 300 tonnes of plastic and 8,200 tonnes of steel.
Toyota Motor Europe has committed to being fully carbon neutral by 2040.
