Tuna-tower recyclability boost

John West has launched fully recyclable packaging for its canned tuna towers.

The food giant’s innovative shrink-wrap-free multipacks are now available at supermarket Asda.

The Ecotwist packaging uses aluminium strips to link cans, disposing of the need for shrink wrap or cardboard.

This will avoid about 65 tonnes of plastic shrink wrap or 300 tonnes of cardboard-equivalent annually, according to the producer.

More than 400 tonnes of steel could also be saved every year by the lighter can, which holds the same amount of tuna but reduces the volume of oil, water and brine required.

John West Foods managing director Mark Doherty said: “We have an ambition to be the most sustainable ambient fish brand in the UK by the end of 2025.

“We have spent three years developing Ecotwist to reduce packaging waste in our consumers’ lives and to make our quality products taste and look even better.

“It’s the ultimate faff-free solution to busy lives – storing and opening the cans is so easy and thanks to no excess packaging, recycling has never been easier, saving our consumers time to enjoy our healthy and nutritious products.”
