RECOUP’s Black Plastic Packaging Forum believes use of black plastic has fallen to just 10,000 tonnes per year going into 2020.

This means it has fallen from a peak of 36,000 tonnes and now represents just 0.7% of consumer packaging placed on the market each year.

RECOUP is now arguing that all of this packaging should be recyclable in current, commercial scale recycling systems by 2025.

Its chief executive Stuart Foster said: “The ultimate aim is to drive black plastic recycling forwards in a practical and sensible way, turning ambitions and collaborative thinking into actual delivery.”

The use of this plastic has been reduced by companies using non-carbon black pigments or alternative colours instead.
