It has a capacity of 270,000 tonnes of commingled material per year and has been designed to achieve a recovery rate of 99 per cent. The Welsh Government provided a grant of £1.7 million toward construction of the facility.

Around 120,000 tonne of high quality paper will be recovered for paper making by UPM.

Jussi Pesonon said: “The MRF clearly demonstrates how integrated manufacturing can work. We are working hard to maximise revenues and minimise waste.”

UPM Shotton is the largest newsprint recycling facility in the UK manufacturing 640,000 tonnes per year of 100 per cent recycled newsprint.
