Waste chiefs join circular economy taskforce

Senior waste industry figures have been named on a panel set up by the government to promote efficient use of resources.

Chartered Institution of Wastes Management vice-president David Greenfield will sit on the Circular Economy Taskforce.

He will be joined by Suez chief technical development and innovation officer Stuart Hayward-Higham and Keith James, head of policy and insights at the Waste and Resources Action Programme.

This 18-strong group will help design a strategy to boost the economy and work towards net-zero carbon emissions through resource efficiency.

Former chief executive of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation Andrew Morlet will chair the taskforce, with University College London professor Paul Ekins as his deputy.

Catherine Conway, director at sustainability consultancy GoUnpackaged, is also on the panel, as is Debbie Fletcher, director at public sector adviser Local Partnerships.

The government said the taskforce would create “a complete Circular Economy Strategy for England that looks far beyond existing commitments, mapping out the interventions required to deliver a circular transition in England and contribute to that across the UK over the next 10 years and beyond”.

It is expected to report to ministers later this year.
