West Midlands council completes £32m recycling facility

Walsall Council has completed construction of a £32 million waste and recycling facility.

The West Midlands authority said the Aldridge amenity would aid its shift towards a circular economy.

A household waste recycling centre will have the capacity to process 40,000 tonnes of rubbish per year across 19 bays, each housing two skips.

The site also includes a waste transfer station, weighbridges, service yards, ventilation systems and office and welfare facilities for staff.

A reuse shop with a workshop area will also operate to refurbish items that would otherwise have been thrown away.

Walsall Council is due to launch a new waste strategy later this year.

“This project is a huge development for Walsall,” said councillor Adrian Andrew.

“Our current facilities have served us well but this project will accommodate our increasing demand and help us all to recycle and reuse more of our waste.”
