After working together to research the market flows of glass, metals and plastic packaging, WRAP and Valpak are to investigate paper and card packaging flows.

The project aims to provide Defra with robust and independent updated estimates of the amount of paper and card packaging placed on the market.

It will then look at the amount recycled, recovered or sent to landfill for the period 2014-2020 in the UK.

These estimates will be at the core of Defra’s policy development and are used to fulfil EU requirements for reporting recycling performance in the UK.

A steering group has been established by Valpak that is made up of the industry, Defra and Environment Agency members to oversee and provide insights into the outputs. It is expected to report in early 2016.

Confederation of Paper Industries director of raw materials Simon Weston said: “The paper industry has for a long time been a leading material in recycling, and this work will provide a valuable insight not only into the amount of material in the UK, but also help identify where improvements can be made.”
