A new range of food-to-go products from Co-operative has seen a reduction of 90 per cent in the use of plastic.
Co-operative has moved from using plastic sandwich packs into a new cartonboard skillet format.
The new fully recyclable format uses sustainably sourced FSC board and has lowered the overall carbon impact by 61 per cent as a result in the 90 per cent reduction in use of plastic.
Working with Paragon Print and Packaging, the new range also uses Paragon’s Freshlife technology to enhance freshness, appearance flavour and texture to help reduce food waste.
Co-operative environment manager Iain Ferguson said: “We continually strive to reduce the carbon impact of our packaging without compromising on the quality or shelf life of the products inside.
“Selecting this skillet for the sandwiches allowed us to maintain the shelf life while reducing the carbon impact.”
The range of sandwiches, sushi, pastas, and flatbreads is part of the Co-operative’s new film and cartonboard packaging for its Loved By Us range.
This range will eventually include 2,500 own-brand goods.
