Plastics that were due to be recycled were used as a cover to import cocaine into Hong Kong, it has been revealed.

Shipping containers that on appearance contained recycled plastic, were used by a South American drugs syndicate to ship cocaine into Hong Kong and then into mainland China.

Eight people have been arrested at a recycling warehouse and in private residences following a tip off about how the syndicate were exporting drugs into China. This includes five Mexicans, an American man, and a Columbian woman with Hong Kong residency.

The drugs were valued at £49 million. Hong Kong narcotics bureau chief superintendent John Paul Ribeiro said: “We believe we have successfully neutralised the multi-national syndicate. We can’t rule out the drug would be sold to the mainland and other countries.”
