Biffa has launched a comprehensive recycling service for cardboard takeaway cups.

The waste management giant will provide advice, equipment and collection of fibre-based single-use drink receptacles from mainland UK businesses.

Following country-specific bans on plastic takeaway cups, legislation is expected to enforce the recycling of cardboard disposable cups in many scenarios from next year.

Biffa’s scheme will see such items transported to UK paper mills to be transformed into new packaging.

Daniel Barrett, business development manager at the waste giant, said “far too many” takeaway cups ended up in general waste streams.

“Despite the eagerness of many businesses to become more sustainable and compliant, the UK lacked sufficient options for the convenient and efficient nationwide recycling of these cups,” he added.

“Now, alongside our disposable vape recycling service, our takeaway cup scheme shows how we’re actively reducing waste by helping people and businesses reuse, recycle and redistribute as much of it as possible so we can all leave a smaller footprint.”

Recycling Association chief executive Paul Sanderson said: “Many takeaway cups contain a high-quality cardboard that can be recycled into new cardboard or paper products. Collection schemes like this ensure that these cups can be kept from general waste so that they can be recycled at specialist mills.”
