Biffa worker’s children’s book printed on recycled coffee cups

A Biffa worker has written a story about recycling paper cups that has been printed on paper made from recycled paper cups.

Hayley Stack, community, education and liaison officer at the waste management giant, worked with paper firm James Cropper to produce the book.

Little Coffee Cup and the Big Surprise tells the tale of a discarded drinks container as it embarks on a journey to become something new.

James Cropper’s CupCycling process was used to collect and upcycle cups into high-quality paper, which the book was printed on.

Fiction meets fact as the Little Coffee Cup’s final destination is revealed to be the mill where the book was produced in the Lake District.

Stack said her mother worked at a bookshop when she was little, giving her an interest in where books were made.

“Then, when reading to my own children, I’d look and see that most of them are actually made in China. That never sat right with me – shipping books halfway across the world when they could be made in the UK,” she added.

“I’ve always thought that if I did my own book, I’d want it to be a special book – an environmentally friendly book. I thought it should be made from recycled content.”
