A three-month communications campaign has boosted recycling in the North West.
The leaflet, radio and social-media education programme led to a 19 per cent reduction in rejection of material at sorting facilities, according to the Recoup charity that led it.
More than 250,000 Preston residents were reached by the campaign between September and December last year.
It was designed to clarify what can and can’t be recycled by households, with a particular
focus on plastics, which were recognised as a key area of confusion.
Preston City Council cabinet member for the environment Freddie Bailey hailed the “brilliant” results.
“By combining local pride with practical information, we empowered people to recycle more and better,” he added.
The local authority collected 11 tonnes more plastic, glass and cans for reprocessing in 2024/25 than in the prior year.
It also recorded fewer contaminants such as general rubbish and plastic bags in recycling bins.
