Council sets date for expanded glass collections after blaze setback

Bedford Borough Council has announced that all its homes and businesses will receive kerbside glass collections from 1 December despite a setback from a fire at a critical facility.

The South Midlands local authority in August warned that the blaze at Elstow Waste Transfer Station had delayed the rollout of the glass recycling service.

But now it is confident enough in its plans to set a date for the full borough to receive collections of the material.

A trial of collecting glass from orange-lidded recycling bins was well-received by residents and crews, according to the council, and boosted recycling rates.

Councillor Nicola Gribble said: “We’re delighted to confirm that kerbside glass collections will start across Bedford Borough from Monday 1 December.

“The strong response to our trial proves that residents want to recycle more glass, and making this part of regular collections is a straightforward way to help our environment and reduce waste.”

The local authority added in a statement: “The council and its contractors are now working closely to ensure that the necessary infrastructure is fully in place to manage the expected increase in recycled glass tonnage effectively.”

Detailed leaflets will be delivered to all households explaining the expanded glass collections, and stickers will be placed on all orange-lidded recycling bins to raise awareness that glass can now be placed in them.
