Shipping line Hapag-Lloyd has said it will ship paper and cardboard to reach China by the end of the year.

In a statement, the company said it has had information from China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment that allowed it to update its previous announcement that shipments would need to reach China by September.

It said: “We would like to provide you with latest information from the Department of Solid Waste and Chemicals of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment (MEE). The timeline for the implementation of the regulation has been changed to January 1, 2021.

“Please note that this is the implementation date for customs clearance, not for the departure date of the goods. The MEE will not allow a transition period for goods that do not complete customs clearance after this date.”

It also added that the Solid Waste Division will publish a catalogue of solid waste products that will be permitted and that this is currently under preparation within MEE.

Although Hapag-Lloyd did not say what these materials are likely to be, China has previously announced that scrap industrial metals such as copper and aluminium will be reclassified to allow them to be imported.
