Illegal waste dumping forces closure of Surrey recycling facility

A local authority in the South East of England has shut a recycling centre after failing to prevent constant dumping of general refuse on the premises.

Reigate & Banstead Borough Council permanently closed its facility at Stubbs Lane in Lower Kingswood on Monday 19 May “due to ongoing fly-tipping problems”.

The site, near the M25 in Surrey, had received “large volumes of non-recyclable waste” despite attempts to crackdown on the activity, said the local authority.

Signs were posted last year warning that continued misuse of the centre would result in its closure.

Hannah Avery, executive member for neighbourhood services at Reigate & Banstead Borough Council, said this week: “We’re grateful to the many residents who do the right thing when recycling their waste.

“Unfortunately, fly tipping at our recycling sites, which can contaminate this recycling, undermines the efforts of the responsible majority.

“I want it to be easy for residents to recycle as much as they can, so am really pleased that all households in the area local to Stubbs Lane can now use our full collection service and are able to recycle all the materials collected at Stubbs Lane, with the exception of textiles, from home.”

The council said it would monitor the closed site to deter any further fly-tipping.
