A joint venture between LyondellBasell and AFA Nord will see linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) recycled into flexible packaging.

Post-commercial secondary packaging plastics will be mechanically recycled at a site in Germany by the joint venture company LMF Nord into content for use in flexible packaging.

Production is expected to begin in 2025 and is expected to produce 26,000 tonnes of LDPE and LLDPE grades per year that will be marketed by Dutch firm LyondellBasell.

The sister company of German firm AFA Nord, TM Recycling, will provide feedstock for the plant. AFA Nord already operates Germany’s only agricultural film recycling plant.

LyondellBasell Circular and Low Carbon Solutions executive vice president Yvonne van der Laan said: “This Joint Venture will provide recycled LDPE and LLDPE materials and complements our existing CirculenRecover range of high density polyethylene and polypropylene products.

“It adds to our efforts in advanced recycling and delivers against our integrated hub strategy, where we invest upstream to provide feedstock from various plastic waste streams. With this efficient full suite of solutions we continue to be the preferred partner of our customers.”
