Marks & Spencer is trialing a ready-meal tray made from paper fibre.
The retail giant is using the innovative packaging on its fiery chicken tikka masala product.
Made of renewable paper fibre, the new tray can be recycled in paper bins without moving its thin plastic lining.
It can be put in both the microwave and the oven as its contents are cooked.
The tray is available in stores and from online delivery service Ocado for a limited time while the retailer gathers feedback.
Marks & Spencer has committed to removing 1 billion units of plastic by 2028 as part of its Plan A roadmap to net zero by 2040 – and is already halfway towards this target.
Andrew Clappen, technical director at M&S Food, said: “We know customers care about reducing the amount of plastic packaging and we’re determined to help them by finding new materials and processes to make sure our packaging is as easy to recycle as possible.”
Adventurer and TV presenter Ben Fogle, also Plan A Ambassador at M&S Food, added: “Innovations like this really have the potential to make a difference and reduce plastic use.”
