Starbucks is rolling out compostable and recyclable takeaway cups across Europe.
The global coffeeshop giant said “significant innovations” meant it could replace the receptacles’ plastic linings with mineral-based coatings.
Starbucks said the latest version of its “iconic white cup” was “the most exciting” yet and delivered the same experience for customers and employees while slashing waste.
Plastic lids will be replaced with fibre alternatives also using the mineral coating, allowing people to recycle or compost the containers at home.
The new cup is created using materials from Northern European forests and technology from Italy while being designed and manufactured at Transcend Packaging’s factory in Wales.
Already live in Spain and Hungary, the containers will come to the UK and Ireland later this year.
Duncan Moir, president at Starbucks Europe, Middle East and Africa, said: “I am really proud of the team that has worked to develop this innovative solution, and I am so excited to see it in the hands of our customers in Europe as they enjoy their coffee.
“We are keen to learn more from this rollout and remain focused on introducing more sustainable innovations to meet the shifting requirements of markets worldwide.”
