A Bristol bus route will be the first in the UK to have a bus powered by food and human waste.

The route 2 in the city will see the bus operate four days per week from the end of March.

It will fill up with fuel at Bristol sewage treatment works in Avonmouth, where GENeco turns sewage and inedible food waste into biomethane.

GENeco managing director Mohammed Saddiq said: “The biomethane we produce from treating sewage and inedible food waste represents a sustainable and renewably sourced alternative to fossil fuels. Not only are we injecting gas into the grid to power homes, but it is also being used to fuel the Bio-Bus in and around Bristol city centre.

“It is great to see the bus go into regular service in the city and I am sure with its eye catching design, it will turn heads as well as open up discussion about how gas-fuelled buses could become the future for more environmentally friendly public transport.”

The bus will be operated by First West of England, which will consider a fleet of these buses if this first one proves successful.
