Materials giant UPM has designed a recyclable cosmetics jar aimed at slashing the use of fossil-based plastics.
The Finnish firm, which has sites in England and Scotland, produced the packaging for Nordic beauty brand Lumene.
The fully recyclable 50ml jars use wood-residue-based UPM BioVerno naphtha, cutting out the use of 60 tonnes of fossil plastic annually and lowering carbon emissions.
Essi Arola, head of packaging and sustainability at Lumene, said: “For consumers the change is not evident.
“The new jar and the label have the same visual appearance and properties as the previous, fossil-based versions.
“However, it is a more sustainable option for a conscious consumer and one possibility to make a better choice.”
Juha Rainio, sales director, biofuels at UPM, added: “Bio-attributed solutions are transforming the world of materials in everyday consumer products.
“We are committed to replacing fossil-based feedstocks with renewable ones and the collaboration with Lumene, [petrochemicals giant] Sabic and UPM Adhesive Materials is an excellent example of this.”
