Viridor recycling centre fire ‘linked to discarded battery’

A major fire at a Viridor recycling centre in South East England last week has been linked to a discarded battery.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service said five engines were at the scene of the Rochester blaze at its peak on Friday 11 July.

Viridor later reported that all staff on the site had been accounted for and the fire had been brought under control.

It added: “There are no further details available as to cause or damage sustained at the moment but we will update as further information becomes available.

“We are thankful to the Kent Fire and Rescue Service for their swift support.”

Residents near the Clipper Close incident were initially advised to keep windows and doors close due to smoke in the area, although that advice was lifted later in the day.

Crews used main jets and ground monitors to contain the fire.

The fire service said: “It is believed the fire started accidentally and has been linked to a discarded battery.”
