Welsh Government seeks views to shape drinks containers DRS

The Welsh Government has asked for views on key details of the country’s forthcoming deposit return scheme (DRS) for drinks containers.

It published a consultation asking 26 questions on the way the controversial initiative should work.

Deputy first minister Huw Irranca-Davies last month said the country would “accelerate” towards launching a DRS alongside the other home nations in October 2027.

Now the Welsh Government has given organisations and individuals until 10 November this year to give their views on how the scheme should look.

Questions in the consultation include whether drinks producers should develop the roadmap for increasing the proportion of reusable containers on the market, and what collection targets should be set on this journey.

Respondents are also asked how the scope of the Welsh DRS should expand over time, with several options given.

Irranca-Davies said: “This scheme will drive innovation, create green jobs and help tackle both the climate and nature crises simultaneously.

“I encourage businesses and all stakeholders to engage with this consultation and help shape a scheme that truly delivers for Wales.”
