Titled Biodiversity and the paper industry: forest management and nature conservation, the study warned that demand for timber posed “a direct threat” to fragile ecosystems.

“A crucial strategy to reduce the environmental impact of the paper industry is recycling,” added the report.

“Paper recycling makes a substantial contribution to conserving forest ecosystems by minimising the use of raw materials obtained from nature.”

Development of effective policies and guidelines for biodiversity conservation within the paper industry is “inevitable” said the academics.

“Policies may incorporate incentives aimed at increasing paper-recycling rates within the paper industry.”
