Italian plastic packaging group ALPLA will invest €5 million (£4.42 million) to create an extrusion system for rPET at its site in Anagni.

At its preform production plant at Anagni in central Italy, ALPLA processes around 50,000 tonnes of PET per year. But by opening the new extrusion system later this year, it expects to add a 15,000 tonnes of capacity of rPET production.

ALPLA hopes to buy post-consumer plastics from local recyclers to feed the facility.

Its head of corporate recycling Georg Lässer said: “We want to promote the bottle-to-bottle cycle and avoid downcycling. In addition, we would like to boost local recycling solutions in a region that does now have the necessary infrastructure for the bottle loop now.

“But with this measure, we are ensuring that we can offer our customers optimum support with realising new specifications and targets in the long term too and that we can offer them top-quality recycled materials.”
