Aluminium-packaging chiefs lobby MPs over DRS

Alupro has urged MPs to back a deposit return scheme and boost investment in recycling infrastructure.

The aluminium-packaging industry body hosted an event at the House of Commons this month.

Sponsored by Labour MP for Ealing Central and Acton Rupa Huq, the reception also included a speech from Tory representative for Harrow East Bob Blackman.

Alupro encouraged policymakers to sign a three-point pledge to work towards a circular economy.

This calls for delivery of a “world-class” deposit return scheme in 2027; implementation of an extended producer responsibility system for packaging that “encourages the use of the most recyclable materials”; and policies that “encourage investment in domestic recycling facilities”.

Alupro executive director Tom Giddings said: “While aluminium packaging recycling rates have continued to increase in 2024, maintaining positive policy progress is critical to further increasing collection volumes and material quality, as well as helping the sector accelerate progress towards an economy that truly unleashes the circular-economy power of aluminium.”

The UK Government last month insisted it was “fully committed” to a deposit return scheme (DRS) despite Wales pulling out of the initiative.

But the Recycling Association has called for the UK Government to “abandon” the “unnecessary” scheme.
