Carbios receives €3 million EU funding to scale up PET chemical recycling tech

French chemical recycler Carbios will receive €3 million (£2.55 million) from the EU Life programme to commercialise its PET chemical recycling technology.

It will work in partnership with T.EN Zimmer, which will provide expertise on monomer repolymerisation of 100% recycled PET, and Deloitte, which will engage in environmental performance analysis.

The entire grant is approximately €3.3 million (£2.8 million).

Carbios has already completed testing of its technology at its demonstrator plant in France.

It will recycles both PET plastic and textile waste.

Carbios chief financial officer Kader Hidra said: “We were able to demonstrate the significant deployment capacity of our enzymatic PET recycling technology by bringing our industrial demonstration unit into operation in September 2021.

“The grant will help fund the development of trials on plastic and textile waste at the demonstration plant, which will help confirm the process’s scale-up and lead to the commercialisation of our technology through licensing.”
