Major scrap company European Metal Recycling (EMR) plans to open a new metal recycling facility at United Downs near Redruth in Cornwall.

The BBC reports that the yard faces local opposition as it is feared that jobs will be lost from three other scrap merchants in the area.

John Orchard, owner of the Orchards scrap yard in United Downs, told the BBC: “It’s going to have an effect on our business, so we will probably shed jobs for a site that will only give employment to six people, which could easily lead to the loss of 30 jobs in the local vicinity.”

EMR is currently in the middle of a consultation period for the site, which ends on 11 August. The company did not comment to the BBC
