EU reveals the 26 countries looking to import its waste under new regime

Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia and Ukraine have expressed an interest in taking non-hazardous waste from the EU after May 2027.

Nigeria, Monaco and India are also among 26 nations to have sent formal requests to confirm with incoming rules.

The European Council last year adopted revisions to waste shipment regulations, making it much harder for member states to export refuse.

Non-OECD countries wanting to receive non-hazardous waste from the EU after 21 May 2027 need to indicate their willingness and ability to manage it.

The union has now released detail of requests received. A final approved country list is expected in November 2026.

The Bureau of International Recycling said the published list “provides essential clarity for recyclers across all material streams”.

“We are delighted that the commission has responded constructively to our call for this critical information to be made public”, said director-general Arnaud Brunet.

“This demonstrates the value of open dialogue between industry and policymakers, and represents a positive step towards minimising disruption to global recycling supply chains as the new regulations are implemented.”
