Recycle Your Electricals' HypnoCat

Campaigners are to use a 3m-tall hologram of a pink cat to startle commuters into joining their bid to recycle 1 million electrical cables.

The HypnoCat will ‘pounce’ on people at London Waterloo station this week in build-up to International E-Waste Day on 14 October.

Technology provided by HyperGram is being used by the Recycle Your Electricals campaign, which is run by not-for-profit body Material Focus.

The pink feline is raising awareness of the Great Cable Challenge.

Millions of electrical leads languish in homes and offices across the country, containing at least 20 per cent copper that could be recovered for use in important products.

Scott Butler, executive director of Material Focus, said: “HypnoCat is out and about and larger than ever before. Using incredible hologram technology in this unique visual way, we hope he will pawsuade many more people to take action and join us in our recycling efforts in the run up to International E-Waste Day.

“Almost all of us have those old, forgotten cables stashed away at home – I have a box under my bed of cables I’ve been holding onto ‘just in case’ but haven’t actually used in months or are broken.

“By recycling them or donating those that still work, we can repurpose or reclaim that valuable copper currently going to waste.”
