Indonesia needs more plastic recycling infrastructure to reduce imports says Minister

Indonesia’s Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita has said that the country needs more plastic recycling infrastructure to enable it to reduce imports.

Currently, the country has a need for 2 million tonnes of recycled plastic each year he said, but its domestic plastic recycling infrastructure contributes only 913,000 tonnes. The remaining 1.087 million tonnes is imported.

The Minister said: “The national plastic recycling industry plays a crucial role in fulfilling demand for raw materials and promoting the competitive edge of the domestic downstream plastic industry.

“Indonesia needs more plastic recycling industries to create a sustainable ecosystem and reduce its dependence on imported plastic.”
