LyondellBasell to build industrial plastic chemical recycling plant in Germany

Chemicals giant LyondellBasell has decided to invest in an industrial-sized demonstration plastic chemical recycling plant in Germany.

Located at its existing Wesseling site, the 50,000 tonnes per year facility will operate from the end of 2025 and will convert post-consumer plastic into feedstock for new plastic production.

It will use LyondellBasell’s MoReTec technology and according to the company will have net zero greenhouse gas emissions.

LyondellBasell chief executive Peter Vanacker said: “We are committed to addressing the global challenge of plastic waste and advancing a circular economy, and today’s announcement is another meaningful step in that direction.

“Scaling up our catalytic advanced recycling technology will allow us to return larger volumes of plastic waste back into the value chain. By doing this, we will have the ability to produce more materials for high-quality applications, retaining value of plastics for as long as possible.”

Feedstock for the plant will come from Source One Plastics, which is a joint venture set up in October 2022 by LyondellBasell and 23 Oaks Investments.
