Aluminium rolling and recycling firm Novelis has developed a new high-strength alloy that is designed for safety-critical components in vehicles.
Two to three times stronger than any automotive aluminium used in high volumes currently, the Novelis Advanz 7000-series products can be used to manufacture components such as bumper systems, crash ring components and door intrusion beams.
The new alloy series will also significant weight reduction when compared to current high strength steels in the marketplace, helping to reduce vehicle weight.
Novelis senior vice president and chief technical officer Jack Clark said: “As more automakers look to reduce vehicle weight and improve fuel economy, high-strength aluminium alloys are playing an increasingly critical role in vehicle design.
“For decades, Novelis has been a pioneer in aluminium alloy development and set the standard in the automotive industry.
“Novelis Advanz 7000-series will drive the industry forward by offering automakers additional weight savings with superior strength for optimal safety performance.”
The company provides aluminium sheet for vehicles such as the Ford F-150, Range Rover and Jaguar XE.
