Over 10,000 tonnes of paper ablaze at Smurfit Kappa site in Birmingham

More than 15 fire engines have been called to tackle a major fire at a Smurfit Kappa facility in Birmingham.

Around 10,000 tonnes of paper has caught fire at the recycled packaging mill at Nechells.

The blaze has been tackled by 100 firefighters to have managed to contain the fire to the seven-acre site.

West Midlands Fire Service station commander Mal Fellows said: “It’s been particularly difficult due to the high winds and the size of the site.

“We’re pretty sure we’ve actually contained this within the boundary. There is a good fire plan at Kappa but we’ve put crews in place to stop the fire spreading.”
