Paper and plastics catch fire at Premier Waste in Birmingham

Birmingham firm Premier Waste has suffered a fire at its materials recycling facility.

Around 500 tonnes of paper and plastics caught fire with West Midlands Fire Service sending 15 fire engines and 75 firefighters to the blaze.

The company’s £4 million materials recycling facility was opened in 2004 and has a contract with Sandwell Council among others.

In a statement, West Midlands Fire Service said: “Good progress is being made at the incident. Crews are using on site mechanical diggers to get the material out of the building to be able to turn over the waste and damp down to prevent further spread of fire.”
