PepsiCo has way to go to meet revised recycled-content target

Drinks giant PepsiCo has revealed that just 15 per cent of its primary packaging was made from recycled content across its key markets last year.

The multinational firm published the figure in a 2024 ESG Summary that was released late last month.

PepsiCo earlier this year watered down many of its sustainability targets. This included replacing a goal for half of all plastic packaging to be recycled by 2030 with a mission for just 40 per cent to be so by 2035 and only for “primary” items used in “key” markets.

The 15 per cent attainment last year shows how far the firm has to go even against this heavily reduced ambition.

However, PepsiCo said 60 markets had at least one of its products contained in material including recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) in 2024.

It added that it had introduced the first rPET carbonated beverage bottle in Taiwan and the first energy drink in India to use the material.

The ESG Summary added: “To help meet our recycled content ambitions, we work with a variety of stakeholders to drive improvements to collection and recycling systems.

“In 2024, we continued to invest in infrastructure that will provide greater accessibility to consumers who wish to recycle through collaborations and engagements.”
