Outdoor textiles manufacturer Polartec has said that it has used 1 billion recycled plastic bottles in its fabric.

The US company provides textiles to outdoor wear companies across the globe, including British brands such as Rab, Montane and Mountain Equipment, as well as US brands such as The North Face.

Although it has been using some recycled content since 1993, it was only in 2010 when it began a partnership with Unifi that it increased the volume of post-consumer PET bottles it used to create its fabrics.

Polartec European marketing manager Alessandro Perseo said: “In the US, over 40 billion plastic bottles are destined for landfill this year.

“One fortieth of this total amount seems a drop in the ocean but it’s a start.

“We are keen to continue our upward trend and increase our commitment to make better use of what’s already been used. Here’s to the next billion.”
