Recycled plastic targets for cars ‘should be brought forward’

Recyclers have called for swifter implementation of incoming laws designed to drive up the amount of recovered material in new cars.

Industry body EuRIC called on the EU to bring forward mandatory targets in the proposed amendments to the End-of-life Vehicles Directive.

As it stands, the mooted changes to that law would require firms to ensure 25 per cent of plastics in new cars come from post-consumer waste.

This would be enforced six years after the directive comes into force, but EuRIC said this timeframe should be slashed to four.

The organisation, which represents recycling firms across the continent, called for “a high level of ambition” from legislators.

“This is vital to ensure automotive circularity and to drive investments and preserve the EU plastics recycling industry, which is facing extremely harsh conditions,” it added.

EuRIC said any attempts to “reduce, postpone, revise or otherwise water down minimum targets” in the directive should be withstood.

It also called for “fair competition through robust certification of recycled content regarding environmental, human health and social aspects”.
