Some grades such as OCC and PET bottles have risen in price in recent weeks but other grades have seen a different pattern.

It remains the case that many are trading monthly while they deal with logistics, although that also seems to be getting easier as deep sea buyers get used to the longer transit times.

Although most bought last week for March, or even before, there was still some trade occurring this week.

There does seem to be some more demand in the market for certain plastics and paper grades at the moment, but there is also a question over whether this is just due to short-term topping up as supplies have dipped, or whether it represents the start of something more fundamental. Arisings continue to be reported as low though.

The pound was unchanged at $1.27 this week and €1.17.

Recycled plastics

The price of PET bottles has come up as a result of more demand in the market as we head towards warmer weather. But also the global price of virgin PET has been increasing.

LDPE film also saw some underlying demand coming from Europe and Turkey helping to push prices up by about £10 per tonne. This may be a temporary impact and demand may yet fall, but some see indications of underlying demand for a number of plastic grades including LDPE and PP in particular.

The PRN/PERN price was mostly stable this week, but the publication of the monthly data in a couple of changes may lead to new market movements.

Recycled paper

OCC was in demand again this week with Asian buyers at the top of the market.

Not everybody was buying and selling though and some were out because they had already done business and some because they couldn’t compete.

This grade was being traded anywhere from low-£90s to some just above £100 with not a huge amount of material available.

Mixed also followed increasing in price as some mills sought value from the cheaper grade.

There were some indications that the PRN/PERN price had fallen, but it was also the case there wasn’t a lot of liquidity in the market until the monthly data is published in the next couple of days.

Recycled metals

While copper was up £25 and brass £50, ferrous grades took a dive by £25 per tonne.
