As part of Tesco’s efforts to reduce the amount of plastic used in its UK business, the retailer has moved to a recyclable paper packaging for its range of own brand tissues.
Multi-packs of Tesco’s tissues have started to move into FSC-certified, recyclable paper packs. A move it predicts will save more than 55 million pieces of soft plastic (an estimated 35 tonnes).
Tesco campaigns manager Courtney Pallet said: “Unlike boxes of tissues, the pocket version tends to be used on the go and can all too easily become litter. The new paper packaging works just as well as the old plastic wrap but is more sustainable.”
Rival supermarket Sainsbury’s has been undergoing a similar transition for its own brand toilet paper and kitchen towel ranges in recent years.
A recent study by Amcor illustrated an increased appetite for own brand products when sustainability efforts are demonstrated by large retailers.
