Two transport centres boost recycling

Two major UK transport hubs have hailed progress on recycling.

Birmingham Airport revealed it had achieved its highest ever recovery rate for waste generated at its main terminal.

The West Midlands aviation hub collected 76 per cent of refuse dumped at the building last year for recycling.

Meanwhile Euston station announced it was closing in on reprocessing 1,500 tonnes of waste in the year to the end of March.

A dedicated refuse management facility is operated by Mitie within the north London travel hub.

Robert Williamson, head of stations and passenger experience at Euston, said: “Our waste management facility is continuing to make a real difference in improving recycling rates and reducing our environmental impact.”

A mobile segregation unit (MSU) brought in to boost waste processing at Birmingham Airport is credited with preventing 1,200 tonnes of material being discarded as non-recyclable. Meanwhile more than 36 tonnes of items left in the terminal by customers, from pushchairs to toiletries, were donated to local charities last year.

Tom Denton, head of sustainability at Birmingham Airport, said: “We’ve seen some significant improvements in waste efficiency since we implemented the innovative MSU, in partnership with The Green Block and Bidvest Noonan, in March last year. Achieving a 20 per cent increase in our recycling rate in just one year is illustrative of the impact that the unit has had in reducing our environmental impact.”
