Central England Co-operative has become only the fourth organisation worldwide, and the first retailer, to meet all four of the Carbon Trust’s standards.

The Carbon Trust Standard verifies progress against four areas, which are carbon emissions, waste outputs, water use and supply chain carbon emissions.

After meeting the criteria for its own and supply chain emissions, the company has invested £21 million in the past two years to improve efficiency and minimise waste. This has now helped it to meet all four standards.

Central England Co-operative chief executive Martyn Cheatle said: “As a responsible business, corporate responsibility (CR) is at the heart of how our organisation operates and we invest a large amount of time and resource in delivering our CR strategy.

“Reducing our negative and increasing our positive impact on the environment is one of four key areas for the Society, so we are absolutely thrilled to be leading businesses in achieving all four Carbon Trust Standards.”
