Welsh council adds mixed-material food packaging to weekly collections

A Welsh local authority has widened the range of products it accepts in its mixed-waste recycling collections.

Powys County Council said paper-based containers such as crisp tubes, gravy granule tubs and coffee cups could be added to red boxes left out at the kerbside each week.

The collection service already accepts plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays as well as metal tins, cans, aerosols, foil and lids.

Now it has added a range of paper-based items to boost recycling rates.

Jackie Charlton, cabinet member for a greener Powys at the local authority, said it was “delighted” to announce the expansion of the service.

“Previously, these paper-based containers would have ended up in the wheeled bin with the non-recyclable rubbish, so it is excellent news that we can now accept these in the red recycling boxes,” she added.

These additional food and drink packets and containers are made from a mix of materials so can not be placed in the council’s fibre-only blue box.

Charlton added: “Powys households have already proven to be dedicated recyclers, and we are keen to develop ways to help increase our recycling opportunities wherever possible.”
