A facility that can recycle two billion plastic PET bottles per year has opened in the United States.

Located in Riverside, California, the 220,000 sq-ft plant owned by carbonLITE is expected to prevent most plastic bottles from the state being exported to China.

With backing from customers PepsiCo and Nestle Waters, the facility will create a PET resin that has a letter of non-objection that will allow it to be used at levels up to 100 per cent recycled content in the manufacture of PET bottles and containers.

carbonLITE chairman Leon Farahnik said: “We’re committed to being the leading bottle-to-bottle recycler, preserving resources and reducing the carbon footprint from PET bottle production. Our customers are allowing us to truly make a large impact by creating a sustainable infrastructure for beverage companies.”
