Liberal Democrat MP Alistair Carmichael has been elected as chair of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee.
The representative for Orkney and Shetland will lead the panel tasked with challenging the work of the government department fronted by Steve Reed.
Born on the Scottish island of Islay, Carmichael has been an MP since 2001 and built a reputation for supporting the renewable energy sector.
He said he was “very pleased” to take up his latest role.
“This Parliament will see the new government make major decisions on the environment, farming, food security and rural communities that will affect us all,” said Carmichael.
“I will work collaboratively with members from across the House of Commons to scrutinise and inform these important decisions.
“I will ensure that the committee gives a voice to rural, coastal and island communities, and fully considers the interests of our fishers, farmers, food producers, processors and exporters, while holding corporate interests such as water companies to account.”
The committee in 2022 published a report calling for recyclable plastic exports to be banned by 2027.
