Packaging mill group Smurfit Kappa has launched a new water resistant paper that is easily recyclable.

AquaStop is part of Smurfit Kappa’s TechniPaper portfolio, which consists of an array of high-performance papers.

A special coating is added to AquaStop paper that makes it water resistant, and can therefore be used instead of single-use plastics. This coasting does not affect the recyclability of the fibre.

Smurfit Kappa said it is particularly suitable for e-commerce packaging, as well as for products such as flowers, detergent, and fruit and vegetables.

It is also suitable for humid conditions as the box remains intact.

Smurfit Kappa paper division Lars Henriksson said: “We are very excited about AquaStop and believe it is a truly revolutionary paper.

“We’re expecting AquaStop to interest many of our customers, particularly those who transport goods in more demanding environments, because of the peace of mind it will give them that their products will remain in perfect condition if exposed to water.

“Our product development team, along with our colleagues in Spain, have created something very special that has superior functionality, while at the same time remaining 100% recyclable.”
