The Government of Thailand has confirmed that it will introduce a ban on the import of plastics for recycling from 1 January 2025.

At a Cabinet meeting, it was decided to fully implement the ban that was previously announced in September last year.

Thailand’s Cabinet also ratified proposals that mean that only 14 plants in the country’s tax free zone will be able to import in 2023. Imports cannot exceed their production capacity, which is 372,994 tonnes.

In 2024, this figure will be halved ahead of the outright ban.

Companies outside of the tax free zone will need to show evidence that they have a shortage of raw materials to meet production demand, and therefore imports are necessary.
